Canals 1 Weeklong trips touring many of the UK canals. Organised by a fellow teacher with me as 2nd Adult.
Canals 2 Weeklong trips organised by me with a crew of friends. UK based
Canals 3 France..more later 5 trips all told
School trips..Canals as above plus ..
One of the teachers at Desborough would organise "European visits". These were always for 1 week mainly at Easter but some in the "Whitsun break". Early trips were with 2x coachloads of 12 & 13 year olds but then a single coachload was preferred. Many lovely places. Germany (Rhine Gorge), Austria (Innsbruck), Switzerland (Interlaken) All great fun about 15 in all !
Rugby. (School)
I consistently helped out at school with rugby and so would be invited on tours organised by the Head of PE. We visited
Northern Ireland (England match in Dublin). Canada (Edmonton, Calgary, the Rockies, Vancouver & Island) . USA San Francisco and the surrounding area. We drove hired minibuses. Canada 2 & USA, Toronto (Niagara) then Boston Area.
Ski-ing (school & private)
After a pleasant but cold introduction at Aviemore, I then graduated to Schooltrips and private trips . Quite a few over an 18 year span. (Austria-4, Italy-6, France-8 , Andorra-3). Never a great ski-er but competent enough (red-runs OK, black=dodgy)
Latterly 3 or 4 of us would drive to somewhere like Tignes or near Geneva and use an apartment.
School trips were usually in budget hotel type accommodation again all great fun !
Cricket
WI v England in Port of Spain (Trinidad) and Sri Lanka v England in Galle (Sri Lanka)
Both tours included all 5 days of the test matches plus days out as well.
West Indies VG Fly via Barbados so a few days in Barbados before flying on to Trinidad.
Barbados very nice and included a flight to another Island and a Catamaran trip (including rum!).
The test match was excellent see-sawing ever session but England won batting last thanks to an opening stand by Atherton & Stewart. Then there was time for a small boat tour !
Sri Lanka.. A short tour beforehand to the Elephant Sanctuary. Then Kandy ( excellent evening show as entertainment) and the train to Nuwara Eliya and then driven via the tea-plantations to Galle. Test match not a good contest Sri Lanka scored over 400 batting first and England subsided due to the excellent Spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. Still all good stuff and celebrated my 50th Birthday !
